Finding car insurance for your Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz is one of the UK's most recognisable car brands. From the compact A-Class to the executive E-Class and the all-electric EQ range. There's a model to suit lots of different drivers.

But when it comes to car insurance, not all Mercedes are the same. Various things can affect the cost of cover – and whether we’ll agree to cover you at all. Like performance, repair costs, theft risk and how old your car is.

In this guide, we'll explain:

  • How Mercedes car insurance worksHow Mercedes car insurance works
  • What can affect the cost – and availability - of coverWhat can affect the cost – and availability - of cover
  • How Tesco Car Insurance can help to keep you protectedHow Tesco Car Insurance can help to keep you protected

How does car insurance for a Mercedes work?

Car insurance for Mercedes works the same way as insurance for any other car. But the cost - and availability - of cover will depend on:

  • The model of Mercedes you have and any modifications you’ve madeThe model of Mercedes you have and any modifications you’ve made
  • How old your car isHow old your car is
  • Your personal circumstancesYour personal circumstances

Mercedes makes a wide range of cars. And because they vary in size, value and performance, insurance costs can vary too.

It's not just about price though. It's important to choose cover that suits your needs for your compact hatchback, an executive saloon or an electric Mercedes.

Your Mercedes’s Vehicle Risk Rating (VRR)

New cars in the UK are now assigned a Vehicle Risk Rating (VRR) score from 1 to 99. This replaces the traditional 1 to 50 insurance group system.

A lower score for your Mercedes generally means it’s lower risk, while a higher score means it’s higher risk.

    VRR looks at things like:

    • Repair costs and repair timesRepair costs and repair times
    • Vehicle performanceVehicle performance
    • Safety technologySafety technology
    • Security and theft riskSecurity and theft risk
    • Parts availability and replacement costsParts availability and replacement costs

These are the same kind of things insurers have always considered, but VRR looks at them in more detail.

Mercedes are treated the same as any other car by insurers. But the specific model, engine and trim can make a big difference to its risk rating and insurance cost.

Does a higher VRR score mean more expensive insurance?

Not necessarily. The vehicle rating is only one thing we look at when you apply for Tesco Car Insurance.

      We also consider:

      • Your ageYour age
      • Driving experienceDriving experience
      • Claims historyClaims history
      • PostcodePostcode
      • Annual mileageAnnual mileage
      • How the car’s usedHow the car’s used

      So, for example:

If you have a clean driving record and live in a lower-risk area, you could pay less for a higher-rated Mercedes than a new driver insuring a lower-rated model.

Does driving a Mercedes affect your car insurance?

                    Yes, it can.

When you get a Car Insurance quote with us, we’ll look at the type of car you drive when we’re:

                    • deciding if we can insure youdeciding if we can insure you
                    • working out the price of your policyworking out the price of your policy

Mercedes-Benz is known for its performance, technology and premium features. And these things can affect the cost of car insurance.

A few reasons Mercedes models might cost more to insure than some other cars:

                    • Higher repair costs for specialist partsHigher repair costs for specialist parts
                    • Advanced technology and safety systemsAdvanced technology and safety systems
                    • More powerful engines on some modelsMore powerful engines on some models
                    • Higher market values than many standard family carsHigher market values than many standard family cars
                    • Increased theft risk for certain modelsIncreased theft risk for certain models

That doesn't mean all Mercedes models are expensive to insure. Smaller models with lower-powered engines, like some A-Class cars, are often cheaper to insure than larger or more powerful models.

What affects the cost of insuring a Mercedes?

The cost of insuring a Mercedes can vary, depending on a number of things.

Different car models have different insurance ratings. For example, a Mercedes A-Class will often cost less to insure than larger models, such as the E-Class.

Cars with larger or more powerful engines are often more expensive to insure because they may be considered higher risk.

Some Mercedes models can be more attractive to thieves than others because of their popularity, value, or the demand for their parts. Insurers take theft data into account when calculating premiums.

Premium vehicles can require specialist repairs and genuine manufacturer parts, which may cost more than repairs on some other cars.

Younger or less experienced drivers often pay more because they're statistically more likely to make a claim.

Insurance costs can be higher in areas with more accidents, vehicle crime or claims.

Drivers with a good claims history and no driving convictions may benefit from lower premiums.

How much is insurance for a Mercedes?

There's no set price for insuring a Mercedes. The cost of cover can vary, depending on:

                                    • The Mercedes model you driveThe Mercedes model you drive

                                    • Any modifications you’ve made to your carAny modifications you’ve made to your car

Remember, the cheapest Mercedes to insure isn't always the best choice. It's worth comparing the overall running costs. Not only insurance, but servicing and fuel or charging costs.

What should you think about when insuring a Mercedes?

Before choosing a policy, it's worth thinking about more than just price.

A newer or higher-specification Mercedes may benefit from a more comprehensive level of cover.

Electric and hybrid Mercedes models may have different repair and replacement costs. Make sure your policy is suitable for your vehicle type.

If you drive long distances or commute regularly, you'll want cover that matches how you use your vehicle.

Parking your Mercedes in a garage, fitting approved security devices and keeping keys secure may help reduce the risk of theft.

                                                            Mercedes car insurance FAQs

Mercedes insurance can be more expensive than some other car brands, because many models have higher values, more powerful engines and specialist parts. However, insurance costs vary between models. A Mercedes A-Class will often cost less to insure than a C-Class, E-Class or S-Class.

Your age, driving history, postcode and annual mileage will also affect the price you pay.

Smaller Mercedes models with lower-powered engines are usually the cheapest to insure. Many A-Class models fall into lower insurance groups than larger Mercedes vehicles, making them a popular choice for drivers looking to keep insurance costs down.

Mercedes C-Class insurance groups vary depending on the engine size, trim level and model year. Entry-level versions are often placed in lower to mid-range insurance groups, while AMG and higher-performance variants can sit much higher. It's always worth checking the insurance group of the model you're thinking of buying.

There's no standard cost for Mercedes A-Class insurance. The price depends on things like your age, where you live, your driving experience and the version of the car you drive. A-Class models generally cost less to insure than larger Mercedes models.

Mercedes insurance costs are broadly comparable to other premium brands, and depend heavily on the specific model, engine size and trim. As with any premium brand, specialist parts and advanced technology can increase repair costs, which insurers may factor into your premium.

Yes. Mercedes drivers can add optional Breakdown Cover with Tesco Car Insurance.

We do this to assess whether we think you can afford to take the product. If you buy a policy and choose to pay monthly, this search will become visible to other credit providers.
