What is cat insurance?

Cat insurance is just pet insurance for cats and kittens. It’s included with all Tesco Pet Insurance policies:

Pet insurance can help with expensive vet bills if your cat gets sick or injured. Having the right cover can also give you peace of mind, knowing they’ll be well looked-after.

You can get a cat insurance quote from 8 weeks old. And some policies, like ours, cover cats up to any age. But as your cat gets older, your premiums are likely to go up.

Monetary limits, excesses and exclusions apply. Please see the policy documents for details.

Excesses will apply to your policy. These will affect the amount of premium you pay and how much you have to pay towards your cat's treatment.

An overage excess will apply to your policy when your cat turns 10 years old. After that, you'll have to pay 20% of any claim you make.

You have to choose a set excess when you take out your policy. You can also choose a percentage excess, which can help to reduce the bill.

For full details of cover and excesses, please see the policy documents.

As cats get older, they’re more likely to get ill. So your renewal price will go up each year.

Please also note, an overage excess will apply to your policy when your cat turns 10 years old. After that, you'll have to pay 20% of any claim you make.

When we pay a claim for a cat, there’s more chance of a claim for that cat in the future. So a claim could cause your renewal price to go up.

The increase will depend on your cat’s breed, age and health. That means there's no limit to how much your renewal price can go up over time.

Kitten insurance helps to cover the cost of vet treatment if your kitten gets sick or injured.

Kittens are curious by nature and can get into trouble. Pet insurance can help to protect you from big, unexpected vet bills.

It’s best to get pet insurance when your kitten is young and healthy. Most policies - like Tesco Pet Insurance - start from 8 weeks old.

No. Most standard pet insurance policies - like Tesco Pet Insurance - don’t cover routine care for your cat or kitten. Like vaccinations, flea treatment or check-ups.

Yes, it can be. Indoor cats can still get sick or have accidents at home. Pet insurance can help to pay for expensive treatment if something goes wrong.

We cover indoor cats with Tesco Pet Insurance.

No. Most policies don’t cover conditions your cat had before your policy started.

Tesco Pet Insurance won’t cover any pre-existing injuries or illnesses in cats and dogs.

In most cases, yes. You can choose any registered vet to treat your cat. Just make sure you keep your invoices so you can claim back costs.

If you have Tesco Pet Insurance, we can pay your vet direct. As long as they accept direct payments.

Yes. With Tesco Pet Insurance, you can insure any age of cat. Policies start from 8 weeks old and there’s no upper age limit.

You should note, though, that pet insurance is likely to cost more for an older cat. And some insurers have age limits or different levels of cover for older cats.

Tesco Pet Insurance policies include an overage excess. That means you'll have to pay 20% of any claim you make when your cat turns 10 years old.
