The cover you get with your car insurance depends on the type of policy you go for, regardless of your age. So the main thing with older driver insurance, as with any policy, is to find cover that’s right for you.

That means, not just the right price, but:

  • a level of cover that meets your needsa level of cover that meets your needs

How to find the best car insurance for older drivers

If you’re an older driver, focus on the features you’ll use, fair pricing for how you drive, and good customer service.

      Start with your needs

Be clear on these things. It can help you to find the best car insurance to meet your needs as an older driver.

      • How many miles do you drive? How many miles do you drive?
      • Where do you park? Where do you park?
      • Are there any named drivers? Are there any named drivers?
      • Do you have any medical conditions to declare? Do you have any medical conditions to declare?

      Compare cover, not just price

Look at what’s included with your cover. And also any limits.

With Tesco Car Insurance, you can choose from 3 levels of comprehensive cover - Bronze, Silver or Gold. And you can add optional extras like Breakdown Cover and Key Cover to get more cover for an additional cost.

        Check customer support

At Tesco Insurance, we know how much our customers count on us. That’s why we’re here to help and support you, with:

        • UK-based customer serviceUK-based customer service

        Remember your no claims discount

A long, clean driving record with no claims can help you to get you the right cover and could lower your premiums.

You can usually take your no claims discount to a new provider. And you can pay extra to protect your no claims discount as an add-on to your car insurance policy.

You can learn more about your no claims discount in our guide - No claims discount explained.

          Set a sensible voluntary excess

A higher voluntary excess can lower your premium, but it means you’ll pay more towards a claim. You should set an amount that you can afford, not just now, but in the future.

You can learn more about voluntary excess in our guide - How does voluntary excess work on car insurance?

            Be accurate with your mileage

If you’re doing less mileage since retiring, make sure you tell us the correct figure when getting a Car Insurance quote. Don’t guess too low - it could affect your cover.

              Park your car securely

Parking your car on a driveway, or in a garage, can help to reduce the risk of something happening to it - and keep the price of your policy down. Approved alarms and immobilisers can also help to reduce the risk.

You can learn more about parking and storing your car in our guide - Parking, storage and your car insurance.

                Time your renewal

The best time to look for car insurance is usually a few weeks before your renewal, when you get your renewal invite. Timing it right can help you to compare cover calmly and avoid a last minute decision.

                  Use your Clubcard

When you buy Tesco Car Insurance, you’ll get a guaranteed discount with your Clubcard.

How does age affect your car insurance premiums?

Your driving experience helps when it comes to car insurance, but there can be more risk as you get older too. The price you pay will often go down in your 50s and 60s, then go up again when you hit your 70s.

If you have any medical conditions, you might need to tell us about them. It depends on what they are and whether they could affect your driving.
