Can you get life insurance as a couple?

Life insurance provides cover if you die or become terminally ill with less than 12 months to live during the length of your policy. If you’re a couple, this can provide some financial support for your partner if you’re no longer around.

With Tesco Life Insurance, you can choose a single or joint policy as a couple.

Why might couples get life insurance?

Life insurance offers a financial safety net if one partner dies or becomes terminally ill. It provides a lump sum payout that can help with things like:

    • billsbills
    • debtdebt
    • expensesexpenses
    • mortgage repaymentsmortgage repayments
    • funeral costsfuneral costs

For couples who have dependents, life insurance can help with the cost of childcare. It can also go towards the cost of university fees.

According to our research, 72% of adults in the UK worry their family wouldn’t be financially secure for more than a year without them*. Life insurance helps to provide peace of mind your loved ones will have some support when you’re gone.

We know how difficult losing a loved one can be. That’s why Aviva, our life insurance provider, offers bereavement support with the Aviva DigiCare+ app. You can get practical and emotional support if you lose someone close to you.

How to get life insurance as a couple

With Tesco Life Insurance, there are 2 ways to take out cover if you’re a couple. You can:

      • apply for a joint life insurance policy togetherapply for a joint life insurance policy together

      or

      • apply for a single policy each separatelyapply for a single policy each separately

      Taking out a joint policy

Joint life insurance covers you and a partner on one policy. It’s sometimes cheaper than buying 2 policies and there’s only one premium to pay each month.

Bear in mind, though, that joint policies only pay out once - usually to the person you have the policy with, unless you’ve made other arrangements. After that, the policy will end, and there won’t be any cover for the surviving partner. You can choose to take out a new single policy if you’d still like cover, but it's likely your premiums will be higher due to you being older.

Tesco Life Insurance lets you take out a joint policy with your partner. And, if you separate later, Aviva might be able to split it into 2 single policies.

        Taking out two single policies

A single life insurance policy is cover for one person only. It pays out a lump sum after that person dies, and there’s no cash-in value at any time.

You and your partner can choose to take out a single policy each. This provides 2 potential payouts, one for each policy.

Taking out 2 single policies can be more expensive than a joint policy. But it’ll give the surviving partner ongoing cover if one of you dies.

This also lets you choose different beneficiaries for each policy. For example, if you have children from a previous relationship.

If you take out separate life insurance policies and you’re not married and you want your partner to receive some or all of the proceeds of the policy, you might want to:

        • name your partner in your willname your partner in your will

        or

        • put your policy under trustput your policy under trust

This can help make sure they receive some of the lump sum payout.
