What is Tenants Liability insurance?

Tenants Liability insurance covers accidental damage to your landlord’s fixtures and fittings that your tenancy agreement says you’re responsible for.

It’s meant for renters, and could cover you for things like:

  • Fitted kitchens - like worktops, flooring, units, electrical cables and pipes
  • Built-in furniture - like fitted wardrobes and cupboards
  • Plumbed-in or built-in appliances - like fitted washing machines and dishwashers

To see exactly what you’re covered for, it’s always best to check your policy booklet.

Why do you need Tenants Liability cover?

Tenants Liability insurance can help you cover unexpected repair bills, and give you peace of mind, especially if the place you’re renting is partly or fully furnished.

If you’re covered, and you damage something by accident, you can get it repaired straight away.

    • You won’t be out of pocket for repairs.
    • You won’t have to worry about losing your deposit to cover the cost of repairs when the time comes to move out.

A little help from Tesco Insurance

Tesco Contents Insurance for renters includes Tenants Liability cover as standard.

So, you can cover the things you own and the things your landlord owns with one insurance policy.

      What does Tenants Liability cover?

Most policies cover structural damage to the building, as well as fixtures and fittings, lights and fitted domestic appliances.

They usually include interior décor as well, so the cost of papering and painting will probably be covered if you damage the walls.

Tesco Contents Insurance for renters covers you for all of these things, and pays for damage up to £10,000*, which could make a big difference when you need to make repairs.

Not all polices are the same, though, so it’s always best to check what you’re covered for.

*Monetary limits, excesses and exclusions apply.

How long does Tenants Liability cover last?

Tenants Liability is usually included with a home contents policy, like Tesco Contents Insurance for renters, so cover lasts for 12 months.

If you’re planning to rent your home for longer than that, you can set up your policy to renew automatically. Remember, though: if your policy does auto-renew, you still need to get in touch with your insurer if anything’s changed that could affect your cover.

Tenants Liability cover and contents insurance

Not sure what the difference is? The easiest way to think about it is this:

Tenants Liability insurance protects your landlord’s property in case you damage it.

Contents insurance protects your personal belongings in case they’re damaged or stolen.

Both types of cover are usually included in the same policy, which makes it easier when you’re renting. With Tesco Home Insurance, for example, you’ll get Tenants Liability cover with our Contents Insurance for renters.

Do I need home contents insurance?

No. You don’t have to have contents insurance by law in the UK, but it can give you some much-needed protection - to help cover costs, and speed up the repairs, if something goes wrong.

It could be a lot more expensive, and take a lot longer to fix something, if you don’t have insurance to cover it.
